In a groundbreaking decision, Health Canada has approved some doctors, nurses, therapists, and social workers to prescribe psilocybin to patients. Psilocybin is an ingredient in “Magic Mushrooms” which causes a patient to hallucinate. Health Canada deemed that as long as the medicine is taken while supervised, the drug is safe to use.
This decision coming out in December was in the works since August as four other exemptions to use the drug on patients were approved.
Health Canada wants to make it clear that no drugs have been approved at this time with psilocybin. Only the people or organizations that have been provided with the exemption can prescribe the drug.
As this is a new field in science and research for Canada, many mushroom farms and organizations will invest time and money into SR&ED. The growth and development of this new industry will see a positive change to patients going forward.
